The quote this week comes from Harrison, who we all have to thank for the excellent little shindig last night. Good stuff. This quote came when Harrison was going to bed and apparently Rashaun Woods was in his house and he did not like that, so he was supposed to leave. Last weeks picks I went 9-7, my best week to date, bringing me up to .500 at 24-24. Against the spread which I really suck at I went 11-5 actually, bringing me to 21-27. I am getting hot baby! I'm on a roll. Alright let's get to the picks. Onwards!!!
Thursday 5:00 PM
Minnesota at Green Bay
Well my wish has finally come true, as the Vikes will be starting rookie QB Tavaris Jackson tonight. The Pack have now won back-to-back games, and will likely be feeling pretty good about themselves. Lambeau will be close to a frozen tundreau tonight, as the forecast is for rain and snow. Once again, I feel I cannot pick against Brett Favre in December at home. I think that Minnesota will really get a spark out of Tavaris, but I don't think that it will be enough for them to win. It is still key to remember that Minnesota is a dome team, and will be a little out of their element in the cold at Lambeau tonight. Green Bay has sort of quietly moved into the top 10 in terms of total offense, and I think that they should be able to get it done tonight against the Vikes.
Prediction: Packers, Packers -4
Saturday 5:00 PM
Kansas City at Oakland
A game that would mean a lot in other years, as this is a big rivalry. However, this year the Raiders, as we all know, suck and the Chiefs are fighting to keep any semblance of playoff hopes alive. Right now they are completly on the outside looking in, as they are the last team in the AFC with playoff possibilities. The Raiders are actually in the top 4 defensively in the league, but offensively no team looks worse. Expect a steady dose of LJ, as the Raiders are awful against the run, and the Chiefs should get a lead early, and then basically run the game out. On a seperate note Namdi Asomugha totally should have made the pro bowl for the Raiders. He has played lights out defense all year, and while lots of teams don't throw on the Raiders cause they don't have to, he deserves a some credit for making the Raiders the #1 pass defense in the NFL.
Prediction: KC, KC -10
Sunday 10:00 AM
Baltimore at Pittsburgh
This is an interesting match-up because you have two teams playing with a lot on the line. Baltimore wants to wrap up the number 2 seed in the playoffs by catching Indianapolis, and Pittsburg has been making a little run and has put themselves in post-season contention. Had the Steelers gotten hot a little earlier, they could really be in good shape for the post-season, but this run might be too little too late. The Steelers strength is running the ball, while the strength of the #1 ranked Baltimore defense is stopping the run. Baltimore's 3-4 has been very effective this year, as Bart Scott, Ray Lewis, and Adalius Thomas have all had pro-bowl caliber years at Linebacker. Pittsburgh really is a tough place to play in December but the weather is not supposed to be all that bad. For this pick I am really going against my gut and taking Baltimore. I think that there D will be able to slow down the running game and force Big Ben into making bad throws, as the Baltimore D is money when it comes to turnovers.
Prediction: Baltimore, Ravens +3
Carolina at Atlanta
A game a few weeks ago that would have looked like a game with huge wild card implications. Its still a big game, as Atlanta fights for a playoff seed, but Carolina has fallen badly. It looks like Weinke will be starting again, and that surely means victory for the Falcons. With Kris Jenkins out, expect a lot of Warrick Dunn and Michael Vick running the ball, as the league's #1 rushing attack could break out for a big day. Last week in their tough loss to the Cowboys, Vick did it all with his arm; this week I expect him to have a big day with his feet and he will eclipse the 1000 yard mark on the season for sure.
Prediction: Falcons, Falcons (no line as of Thursday)
Chicago at Detroit
A bad one-sided matchup. The Detroit Lions are the posterboard of poor management, as the ownership has let Matt Millen run this team into the shitter. Chicago almost slipped up last week against a poor opponent, but I think they will coast to an easy victory this week. One point: yeah its great that Rex Grossman is starting to turn it around and play well, but he still has not faced a good team in some time. When he gets to the playoffs, that's when he really needs to start being a good QB, as putting up points against poor teams that you should beat does not count for all that much. The Lions need to really take a good look at John Kitna and decide whether they think he can carry the reigns for another year or two, and if this is not the case, they better start talking to Brady Quinn.
Prediction: Bears, Bears - 5 1/2
Indianapolis at Houston
I really don't like the Colts at this moment for fantasy reasons (Marvin Harrison knocked me out of the championship) but they should win the match-up handedly. The Colts should try to get an early lead and then run the ball with Joseph Addai (if healthy) and Domenic Rhodes. We all know that they can pass, but in terms of the run they are in the middle of the pack, and they might try to sharpen up before they reach the playoffs. The Texans possess few weapons for the Colts to worry about, and since the Texans have no real RB, the Colts should not be gashed that badly.
Prediction: Colts, Colts -10
New England at Jacksonville
The first real toughy of the week. Jacksonville is ridiculously inconsistent, but they always find a way to show up for big games, especially home games. New England has had a rocky season as well, but are leading the AFC East by a good margin, and are a win or Jets loss away from clinching. The Pats rushing attack has been middle of the road, and the Jacksonville road graters up front should be able to shut down an aging Corey Dillon. Tom Brady could go off and have a big game, but I cannot see that happening this week. I expect the Jags will pull this one out in a close, low-scoring match-up, featuring two teams with defenses that could take them past the first round in the playoffs. Jacksonville right now is the 7th seed in the AFC, but i expect the Broncos to slip up, and I think the Jags will sneak in as the 6th seed.
Prediction: Jags, Jags -3
Tampa Bay at Cleveland
This is without a doubt the worst matchup of the week. Two teams going nowhere, with no #1 draft pick aspirations, and no starting QB's. I tell you, I can't wait to watch Tim Rattay vs. Derek Anderson! What a matchup. Barf all the way around.
Prediction: Cleveland, Browns -3
Tennessee at Buffalo
This on the other hand, I feel would be a game to watch. A really silly little game, as the winner is going to end up being over .500. Vince Young has beaten me almost every week, to the extent that whenever I do picks in the future, his clutchness is going to be a factor to always consider. The man just knows how to win games, (Cliche!). Buffalo, like I said last week, I know little about, but from what I can tell, they are winning with defense, as they are second from the bottom offensively, but are close to the top in Points per game defensively. I think Vince Young might beat me again, because I am going with the Bills. I like the home team here playing in cold shitty Buffalo. The Titans aren't used to Buffalo weather, and Vince Young has only ever played in Tennesse and Texas, so I think he may be thrown off by the cold. But he's proven me wrong many times already, and I wouldn't be surprised if he does it again.
Prediction: Bills, Bills - 4 1/2
Washington at St. Louis
Another one of those game that really in the grand scheme of things means little. Yea, St. Louis is in contention for a playoff spot (barely), and Washington beat New Orleans last week (a total trap game scenario), but really eeh. Who cares. I think the Rams should be able to run on the Skins and put up a win on the turf. I haven't been really following Jason Campbell closely but it seems like he can play a little and maybe this game will be close. Hopefully at the very least it will be high scoring.
Prediction: Rams, Rams -2
New Orleans at NY Giants
This game is sad for me to comment on. The Giants to me look just about done; they are poorly coached on both sides of the ball, but the second i count them out I feel like Al Pacino in the Godfather, "they pull me back in" with a win. New Orleans is a team to watch in the playoffs. I absolutly cannot see them being beaten in the Superdome. This is the type of game where the Giants stick around for three quarters, keeping it close and then get burnt by two Reggie Bush touchowns for 50+ yards at the end. It never fails with the Giants, they used to do the same thing with Deion, and a few years back they did the same thing with Brian Westbrook. Coughlin in my book has to go at the end of the year, while at the other end of the spectrum, ex-Giants offensive coordinator Sean Payton has to win the Coach of the Year. Also the Giants will not be able to stop the Saints passing attack. Eli Manning actually played decently last week, both interceptions can not be completly attributed to him, and he threw the ball very well aside from that. Classy move by Coughlin though throwing him under the bus during his postgame comments last week. Hopefully Strahan will be back for an emotional boost.
Prediction: Saints, Saints +3 (Don't even ask me how the Giants are the favorites for this game, that is absolutely ridiculous)
Sunday 4:00 PM
Arizona at San Francisco
Don't look now, but the Niners have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs. They play a shitty Arizona team this week, a mediocre Denver team next week, while the Seahawks play SD this week and a potential slip-up game at TB to end the year. To be honest, I feel Frank Gore has to be in the running (we all know LT will win) for the MVP award; he deserves some third and fourht place votes, as really only two other players that I can think of have been more valuable to their team. I liked what I saw in the second half from Alex Smith last week, and he Norv Turner should focus on more of the same with him. He's still young and inexperience, so you can't expect too much, but he definately shows glimpses of loveliness. Arizona is a funny little team. Offensively, I think there sick, as Edge, Anquan and Larry Fitzgerald are quite a trio, but they always find a way to be poor. I hate to say this to all the Niners fans but I feel kind of an urge to pick them this week, but I still think the Niners pull it out. However, I want to attach a quote from my favorite sports writer, Bill Simmons, The Sports Guy for ESPN says this :
"I'm worried about the 49ers fans: They're a little too excited for the whole, "We're going to beat the Cards, and Seattle's gonna lose, and if we win and they lose next week, we win the division!" scenario. You'd hate to see them get their hearts broken and have to drown their sorrows in Syrah on Sunday night."
Prediction: 49ers, Niners -4
Cincinnati at Denver
From this point on, this week has no easy buckets. Denver will be feeling good about their win last week, while Cincy needs to bounce back from their loss to the Colts. To be honest, this game depends on whether or not Carson Palmer plays and I am doing my pick that way. This is what you get for doing your picks on Thursday. I have doubted Jay Culter a little this year, but that pass he threw 63 yards in the air over Javon Walker's shoulder was pretty. The Bengals need to get a win this week, and I expect that they do, and I think that we will be seeing Carson Palmer play.
P.S. Check out Chad Johnson's shoes. If he wears the same ones as he did last week, you gotta see them because they are covered in pictures of all his successes and shenanigans.
Prediction: Bengals, Bengals +3. If Carson Palmer doesn't play Broncoes, Broncs -3
San Diego at Seattle
This could be the most interesting game of the week. SD are the favorites, and its hard for them not to be, but I'll tell you now, and I am sorry 49ers fans but I am picking the Seahawks. The Chargers are still in position for the first seed and everything is looking good, but I am still feeling a trap loss in the next two weeks. Hopefully for the Niners sake its next week but I think its coming now. Marty Schottenheimer still has yet to blow a game this year (he always blows at least 1) and going into the playoffs, who knows what Marty will do. Also, Seattle playing at home in a playoff clinching scenario is pretty tough to pick against, we all know their 12th man is money, though they did lose in the same circumstances to the Niners last week. Shaun Alexander needs to bust open with a big game; I have never been a big Matt Hassleback fan and I still don't believe he can win the big game on his own. The Chargers need to start resting LT and keeping him fresh for the next two months.
Prediction: Seahawks (sorry), Seahawks + 4 1/2
Monday 5:00 PM
Philadelphia at Dallas
The match-up of two of my least favorite teams, because they both took 1 off the Giants this year. Dallas is in great shape to be the number 2 seed in the playoffs, and the Eagles are in good shape to win a wild-card spot. Then who slips up? I say the Eagles. The Eagles have been playing with a lot of passion and heart these past couple of weeks, and I just feel that they are due. Dallas I think got their last loss out of their system, and I think they'll win out in the regular season. Dallas should be able to run the ball against the Eagles and should be able to contain Brian Westbrook, and I think that this game could get one sided.
Prediction: Cowboys, Eagles +7
Monday 8:30 PM
NY Jets at Miami
Yay two Monday Night Christmas games this year! In this game, the Jets playoff hopes come to an end as they lose to the Dolphins. For some reason, I have a really strong gut feeling about this game. This is just the type of game wild-card contenders seem to lose; the big game on national TV while playing a mediocre opponent on the road. All signs point to a Jets victory here, as they beat Minnesota last week on the road and are currently tied with the same record as the other 2 wild card teams, but I just gotta bad feeling about this game.
Prediction: Dolphins, Dolphins -2 1/2
I'm still feeling a little hungover from last night so sorry if there is more gramatical mistakes this week. I'm doing my best.
